Getting Started

I've tried beginning with a grand expedition. It left me with a grand view of the place where I died. A small foothold is a better start, and it leaves time to enjoy what turns up.

This is an open alpha. Systems and balance are still changing. Check Discord for testing and wipe announcements, and keep the feedback instructions handy.

Before wandering far

  1. Gather cloth and basic materials for a sleeping bag and simple tools. Put the bag somewhere you will recognize in poor light.
  2. Find food and drinkable water. Check cold and wetness; hold a lit torch when you need its warmth.
  3. Make a small shelter, secure useful storage and keep some cloth, food, medicine and a replacement tool there.
  4. Explore one short loop around home. Notice the roads, water, animals and nearest useful settlement before making it longer.

During your first 45 connected minutes of the current wipe, many armed island inhabitants leave you alone while you carry no threatening firearm or heavier weapon in your belt or main inventory. Bows, crossbows and simple melee tools do not end this grace. Attacking somebody gives them reason to retaliate. Wildlife and environmental dangers still apply, and the time limit ends even if you stay unarmed.

Choose tonight's activity

If you fancy… A useful first project
A quiet shore Check washed-up cargo, then learn a short scavenging circuit.
Fishing Bait an ordinary rod and learn one stretch of water before chasing a specialist catch. Fishing
A homestead Plant something, arrange fresh water and learn a meal you can keep making. Home & Workshop
A trip into town Inspect the merchants, find a public phone and watch where the free balloons go. Transportation

Search beyond the usual barrels and crates. Some wreckage, machinery and ordinary-looking objects offer an action prompt. I still try the occasional useless cupboard; once in a while the cupboard justifies it.

Make the next trip easier

The tech tree is closed. Find blueprints, research eligible equipment, read books and practice the work you enjoy. Use these views when you want to know what has changed:

Command Use it for
/skills Skills earned through practice
/learned Knowledge and abilities you have learned
/achievements Milestones and rewards waiting to be claimed
/craft Extra island recipes and their requirements
/fx Current effects from meals, medicines and stranger discoveries
/toggle Your inventory, sound, notification and clock preferences

Deploy a mailbox when home is ready for deliveries. It becomes a Mail Terminal, and your first qualifying placement can bring a welcome publication from the Island Mail Network. Leave the box in place and collect the book. That welcome is once per player, rather than a fresh parcel every wipe.

If you die

Read the message. An ordinary protected-world death normally returns you as a ghost, carrying only its shroud and torch. Your health display counts down the five-minute return window. Go to your own active gravestone and use E to pray. A successful ghost prayer restores your belongings and health.

Stay connected during recovery. Logging out while ghosted gives up. /giveup abandons the unresolved contents of all your active graves, scattering them into the world. There are further rules for expired ghosts, old graves and legal-PvP deaths; keep the recovery instructions handy.
