Weather

A forecast has saved me several swims and at least one foolish walk into cold country. Conditions build and move across the island, changing visibility and the usefulness of ordinary work.

Rain changes the work

Rain waters exposed planters and fills supported outdoor liquid containers. Improvised catchers work more slowly and hold less than proper equipment. After a shower, look for fresh mushroom patches; I often turn a postponed trip into a gathering walk.

Swamp margins are worth another look after sustained rain. A partly buried cargo crate can appear in the shallows or along a usable bank. Bring carrying space and check the water for crocodiles before inspecting the lid. The scavenging notes cover the search.

Wet ground is less welcoming to wildfire. Rain can extinguish exposed burning ground, and fresh water works locally through buckets, hoses and sprinklers. Leave the spreading fire's path before trying to manage it.

Exposed rechargeable batteries sometimes give harmless sparks. Their charge and wiring still need checking in the usual way.

Thunder is heard by more than people

Moonlit clouds above a dark forest

Wolves may scatter and regroup after thunder. Jungle cats seek shelter, and crocodiles can slip beneath the waterline. Watch where animals go when the storm changes; a quiet crossing can become occupied again later.

Fog is an invitation with poor visibility

Mist among pale tree trunks and dark undergrowth

Local fog pockets can carry unusual color and light. Mining near them can be more rewarding, particularly at night. Choose a visible way back before working a node; sound can announce your mining to something you cannot yet see.

The same active bonus fog strengthens rod fishing and increases ordinary fish-meat yield from gutting. Check /fx for Fog fishing while close to the field; leaving it ends that benefit. The Fishing guide explains how it fits with equipment and other bonuses.

Some swamps develop their own lights and mist after dusk. Those scenes are separate from the bonus fog: the atmosphere alone gives no mining or fishing-stat benefit. I still take a rod, but I choose a bank by what is in the water and leave myself a visible way out.

Red weather

Red clouds over palms and a river

The Red Moon brings a progressive wolf hunt, sometimes accompanied by warning-red fog. Ordinary packs yield to the event. Howls and announcements give you reason to finish an exposed errand and decide whether to join the night outside. Wolf preparations are worth reading beforehand.
